The inspiration for the Light Vessel first came to Darryl Arawjo on a sun washed day on the trout stream. He was intrigued by the play of light on the fishing line and how it glistened and sparkled on the water. Since fishing and basketmaking are a closely woven part of his life, he wanted to embody this special mood in a basket.

The first small basket woven of monofilament sat in the workshop for several years while they pondered the finishing touches. One day the muse spoke and all the elements fell into place.

The light vessel takes basketry to a new level. It is a totally new design; the result of a progression of ideas and work that spans their twenty years of basketmaking.

Finely handwoven of clear or colored monofilament over handsplit oak and hickory, the weaving of a Light Vessel is extremely labor intensive. Since they personally do all of the work on each piece, production is greatly limited.

Because of their uniqueness we believe these original Arawjo designs represent a new and exciting direction for American besketry and will be important additions to every collection.

Darryl Arawjo graduated from Pennsylvania State University (1976) and went on to teach environmental education both for National Audubon and Penn State. Basketmaking is an extension of his natural ability for woodworking and a deep love for the outdoors.

Karen Arawjo graduated from Kutztown State University (1975). Following Darryl's lead she was drawn to basketmaking for artistic expression. By sharing skills and ideas they create a diverse range of basket styles and designs.
